Living in a car with no place to go on Christmas

Camping in your car for fun whilst on a long road trip may be fun, but what if living in your car was the only safe option for you to sleep? What if your car was the only place you had to spend Christmas day? What if that very same car had to keep you warm and safe throughout the entire winter? Unfortunately that is a reality for far too many people.

The reasons for losing their secure dwellings may be numerous, but one thing is for certain, this downward spiral could happen to any of us if we are unfortunate, It could be people who were in good jobs, but got made redundant, and after failing to secure a replacement job for an extended period, could not afford to pay their rent or mortgage. Perhaps families who sold everything to pay for healthcare or the well-being of loved ones or even families who found themselves unlucky too many times in a row, without being given a short pause to pick themselves up. These are situations which perhaps many can relate to or may even fear, however all are practical situations that can find many of us in trouble.

Sleeping in a car may be the last resort for many people who find themselves stuck in a downward spiral. The only option for people who have nowhere else to turn too and who see no other way out. But imagine what living in your car does to a persons dignity and self respect. Having to use public toilets and showers to maintain personal hygiene, whilst living with the constant reminder that you somehow failed and had to resort to living in your car. The windows all around you allowing the whole world to view just how unfortunate you are and people being able to see everything you do. Now just add the bitter cold of winter into the equation and you can see that living in your car during Christmas would not be fun at all.

Getting out of this situation is not easy either. The first priority is to cover debts and to earn enough money for you to regularly meet your costs. That is not even considering the extra money that should be saved to avoid a repeat of the same problem in the future. But, when you self worth is at an all time low, and you are willing to take any badly paid job just to be able to survive, it is easy to see how difficult escaping such a situation can be. Many people unfortunately will be stuck in this situation for years, with the fortunate few being able to break free whilst many more will slip further and further into distress and may even end up on the street when they cannot afford to maintain their cars any longer.

If Christmas is a time of giving, then surely we owe these people just a chance to help lift them out of this downward spiral and give them the helping hand they need to escape this life forever. Christmas is our chance to help lift the self esteem of someone who really needs it and help give them both the self belief and guidance to make the new year a much better one. Of course, your donation can go a long way, but your time and practical involvement can go a lot further. Get in touch with your local homeless shelter today, and see how you can help make a real difference this Christmas. Living in a car is surely no way to spend Christmas, so now it your turn to step up and help give somebody in need a chance to build a better future.
